Project summary
The project envisages the introduction of the brand new next generation steel plant at the market, that uses advanced technology that will ensure environmental cleanliness of steel production through without waste. The project will displace the traditional steel production method, and, therefore, reduce greenhouse gas emissions (mainly CO2,), also the project will orient other enterprises to implement similar technology.

Technology
Project activity envisages the installation of:
- two Midrex units with capacity 1,7 mio. t. of direct reduced iron (DRI) each;
- two Eectrical Arc Furnaces (EAFs);
- two Slab Casters (SCs);
- two Ladle Furnaces(LFs);
- auxiliary production facilities.
The project is the modern alternative at the market. For today none of steel plants in Ukraine have implemented similar project because of high investment costs and a number of other risks, only two steel plants in Europe are using Midrex technology (in Germany and Russia). The project realization is actually a breakthrough in the Ukrainian iron and steel sector, because the steel is produced directly from iron ore bypassing sintering, coke production and Blast Furnace stages. The project will significantly improve overall resource efficiency in Ukraine as it is focused on creation of added value for Ukrainian economy and export of finished products instead of raw materials to foreign markets.

Emission reductions of СО2
In the proposed JI project the iron production is based on iron ore restoration below the melting point in the Midrex technology. The facility will consume iron pellets from the Poltava ore-dressing and processing enterprise (OPE) as a raw material and natural gas as a fuel. In comparison with traditional method of iron production in Ukraine, this method is considered to be environmentally friendly and it considerably reduces GHG emissions, because it doesn’t require blast furnace manufacture.
